World IPv6 Launch Chapter Events

Today Is The FINAL Day To Register For World IPv6 Launch!

As we’ve noted before, today is the final day to register your website as an official participant in World IPv6 Launch.  While the launch is June 6, 2012, we are only taking registrations for official participants until the end of the day today.

Now, one important detail:

You do NOT have to have your website IPv6-enabled until June 6!

But you need to submit the participant registration form by the end of May 30th in order to be listed as a participant on our official list on the website.

The reason for the earlier deadline is that we need time to verify all registrations and also to make sure they all get included in the measurements that will be tracking IPv6 capabilities of the participants.

So if your website is already reachable over IPv6 – or if you think you can get it IPv6-enabled by June 6 (perhaps by using a CDN?) – please take a moment and fill out the form so that we can add your site to the ever-growing list.

Here’s your chance to be listed among the industry leaders who are being part of the movement that will change the Internet forever!

As a registered participant, your website will be included in the list that will be promoted in the marketing for the launch. People searching through the list will be able to see that you were part of the big event! Your site will also be included in the IPv6 measurements… which will continue after June 6th.

This is your chance to show your industry leadership to the global community! REGISTER AS A PARTICIPANT TODAY!

Not sure how to IPv6-enable your website?

We’ve posted steps for content providers to learn the options you have to IPv6-enable your website. In particular, take a look at what a content delivery network (CDN) can do to help IPv6-enable your site.

Check out the options – and get started today!

Note: If you can’t make (or miss) the registration deadline of May 30th, you certainly can still participate in World IPv6 Launch by doing whatever you can to IPv6-enable your site by June 6th. So please… go right ahead and do it! (We just won’t have you listed as an official participant unless you register by May 30th.)

Akamai Webinar Today – Implementing IPv6: Experiences and Lessons from the Real World

Akamai logoOn the topic of CDNs that I posted about earlier today, Akamai is hosting a webinar today in about an hour at 12 noon US Eastern on the topic of:

Implementing IPv6: Experiences and Lessons from the Real World

The event is open to the public to register.  Now, obviously, this is a vendor webinar and so it will have their perspective about how they can help you, but regardless of whether you choose to use Akamai as a CDN provider the session may give some useful insight into the role a CDN can play in helping with the IPv6 transition.

If you can’t attend live today, Akamai indicates that the webinar will be available for on-demand viewing as of tomorrow. (Presumably you will still need to register to view the webinar.)

Video: How To IPv6-Enable ANY Website Using A Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Want a quick way to make your websites available over IPv6, even if your own web server is only on IPv4?

A “content delivery network (CDN)” (also called a “content distribution network” by some) can do exactly this, as I explain in this video about IPv6 and CDNs:

A CDN can provide an excellent way to make content available over IPv6. As I mention in the video, we’re maintaining a list of CDNs providing IPv6 capability at:

http://www.internetsociety.org/deploy360/resources/ipv6-and-content-delivery-networks-cdns/

(with a shortened link of “bit.ly/ipv6cdns“)

IF YOU ARE WITH A CDN THAT IS NOT LISTED, BUT YOU PROVIDE IPv6 SUPPORT, please follow the link on that page to let us know about your services.

If you are looking to quickly make your content available over IPv6, a CDN may be the fastest answer for you.  Check them out as an option!

P.S. If you think your websites will be IPv6-accessible by June 6, 2012, REGISTER TODAY  as an official participant in World IPv6 Launch.  Today is the final day to register as an official participant!

Friday IPv6 Meme Image: Y U No Use IPv6?

As we mentioned last week, we thought we’d end our work week with a bit of humor, and thus… IPv6 meme #2… enjoy!

And as we said before, PLEASE SEND US YOUR MEMES!

FCC: The Countdown to IPv6 is On!

FCC logoWhat if I told you that the world was running out of postal addresses or phone numbers, and that, in less than two months, many companies you regularly do business with will have a new system of contact information?  You’d want to learn more about this system and perhaps make a few preparations, right?  Such a big transition is not happening for postal addresses or phone numbers, but something close to that is happening for Internet addresses.”

And so begins an excellent blog post from the CTO of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Henning Schulzrinne, about the impending World IPv6 Launch on June 6, 2012 and what people need to do to check their IPv6 readiness.  While he points out that all current web addresses will work after June 6, he points out very clearly why consumers and businesses need to care about IPv6:

“However, as IPv4 addresses run out, most new websites and online services will have IPv6 addresses that can only be accessed if you have your computer or network equipment is prepared.  In addition, the performance, reliability and security of the Internet and online services (such as video streaming and IP telephony) may slowly degrade unless most web traffic and network equipment is made compatible with IPv6.  Finally, as new IPv4 addresses become harder and harder to get, new businesses, from providers of content and services to new ISPs, will find it more difficult to get started and compete with established firms unless they utilize IPv6.”

He also points out a new guide for consumers published by the FCC: “Internet Protocol Version 6: IPv6 for Consumers.”

It’s excellent to see this support for World IPv6 Launch coming out of the FCC and definitely thank Henning Schulzrinne for this advocacy of the transition to IPv6!

The Top 4 Websites Are Permanently Enabling IPv6 – Are You?

On June 6, 2012, as part of World IPv6 Launch, the top 4 websites in the world – Google, Facebook, YouTube and Yahoo – are all permanently enabling IPv6 because they understand that their content needs to be reachable by everyone.

Google, Facebook and Yahoo understand that as IPv4 addresses run out and more and more people want to connect many devices to the Internet, those devices may have to operate on IPv6 networks – and will reach IPv4-only content through IPv6-to-IPv4 gateways that will impact the speed of people getting to their content.

These top 4 websites, plus Microsoft Bing, AOL, Netflix and hundreds of other sites all recognize that speed matters and that they want to make their sites available to all users on all networks.

Will you join them in making your website(s) available over IPv6 on June 6, 2012?

We have some tips for content providers on how you can enable IPv6 for your website(s) - and if you’ll be ready by June 6 you can register as an official participant.  Hurry, though… registration for the official list closes on May 30th!  (But you don’t have to have the site enabled until June 6th.)

The top 4 websites are going to IPv6 – will you join them?

ZyXEL Joins World IPv6 Launch As An IPv6-Enabled Home Router Vendor

With World IPv6 Launch only a little over 12 days away, we were delighted to see a new addition to the list of home router vendors participating in the Launch.  ZyXEL, a manufacturer of a wide variety of networking and telecommunication products, announced their inclusion on the list and the availability of an IPv6 portal about their products:

ipv6.zyxel.com

Their list of home router products can be found under the “Solutions for Service Providers” tab on that page, presumably because service providers would be providing these products to their customers.  The University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab (UNH-IOL) notes on its Home Routers Test List that the ZyXEL Keenetic series of products were tested and certified with IPv6.

Congratulations to ZyXEL for getting their products certified as IPv6-ready in time for the World IPv6 Launch! The process of participating as a home router vendor is perhaps the most involved as the company must have its products tested for IPv6 interoperability by UNH-IOL or other IPv6 Ready Test Labs in accordance with the IPv6 Ready CE Router (CPE) Interoperability Test Scenario.  World IPv6 Launch really represents the beginning of this effort that will continue on through the rest of this year and beyond.

Congrats again to ZyXEL for joining Cisco and D-Link as the first home router vendors with fully certified IPv6 support!
