Internet Society Job Opening: Senior Manager, Media Relations

Internet society isoc 300x149We're hiring! The Internet Society, my employer, is hiring for a range of positions, but the one I want to highlight here is the "Senior Manager, Media Relations". As the job posting states:

The Senior Manager Media Relations will be responsible for developing and executing public relations programs to increase the visibility and thought leadership of the Internet Society in the media.. The media relations strategy aligns with the organization’s priorities and is focused on programs and initiatives in the areas of Internet policy, technology, development, and education.

This new role will report to the Director of Media and Communications, be part of the Communications Team, and have a broad purview with many opportunities for visibility and impact. The candidate will collaborate with senior management, subject matter experts, and Regional Bureau Directors around the world. This position will be located in the Internet Society office either in Reston, Virginia USA or Geneva, Switzerland.

I can't speak highly enough about what the mission of the Internet Society means to me - and how critically important this time is right now in the evolution of the Internet. Back in 2011 I wrote about why joining the staff of the Internet Society was important to me - and 3.5 years later those reasons are still as important today as they were then... if not even more so! We've got an aggressive set of activities planned for 2015 - and we need people to help turn that action plan into reality.

We need people to join us to help tell the story of why the choices we make today for the Internet matter - and what we all as individuals and as organizations can do. In this particular position we're seeking someone who can help with connections out to the media around the world.

If you have a background in public relations / media relations, this is your chance to join a mission-based organization focused on ensuring that the Internet remains open for everyone around the world.

I love waking up fired up to go out there and help in whatever small way I can... you can join us!

PLEASE NOTE: I am personally not involved in the hiring for this position... the way to submit your information for consideration is at the bottom of the position posting.

Today’s VUC Google+ Hangout About “Moving The Web To HTTPS”

It’s a bit late-notice for many of you, I realize, but in about 1.5 hours at 12 noon US EST (17:00 UTC) today, the “IP Communications & VoIP Community” will be having a Google+ Hangout on Air on topic of “MoreCrypto: Moving the Web to HTTPS”. Given that this relates to our TLS For Applications topic area, I thought it might be of interest – and I’m intending to join myself.  For more info and the link to watch just click/tap the image:

VUC 526

As noted on the VUC episode page, the speaker is:

Daniel Appelquist, who describes himself as an “open web advocate”, joins us to talk about TLS on the web: some good reasons for using it and the common objections to it. As someone with a very wide experience in IP and network communications, a session with Dan and our VUC regulars should be excellent!

Dan is also a co-chair of the W3C Technical Architecture Group (W3C TAG). The TAG is a special working group within the W3C, chartered (under the W3C Process Document) with stewardship of the Web architecture.

The session will be recorded for later viewing at that same link.

TDYR 220 – Father / Daughter Curling Time Tonight!

TDYR 220 - Father / Daughter Curling Time Tonight! by Dan York

Video: Watch A Juniors Curling Game At Nashua (NH) Curling Club

Interested in watching a curling game played by youth?  Earlier this month I streamed some of the games of the Nashua Juniors Curling Bonspiel (ages 12+) coming out of the Nashua Curling Club in nearby Nashua, NH, and this is one you might enjoy as it was a well-played game with a nail-biting finish!  My 12-year-old daughter Chloe was one of the players and I tried throughout the game to provide some commentary about what was going on.

One of the great aspects about youth curling is that when the kids go out on the ice to play they are all alone. There are no coaches or adults.  When they go through the door onto the ice, it is entirely up to them.  All the great moments are theirs… as are all the mistakes.  They have to do everything to keep the game going.  They have to do it all.   All we can do as parents is be on the other side of the glass watching…. :-)

This video gives a good example of youth curling – the game starts at about 7:20 into the video.  Enjoy!  (And please sign up if you’d like to bring this kind of youth sports activity to the Monadnock region!)

CloudFlare Seeks Help Testing Their DNSSEC Implementation

CloudFlare logoThis morning the team over at CloudFlare announced they have begun their DNSSEC implementation and asked for help in testing what they have done so far.

They also include a note at the bottom indicating that people interested in participating in their public beta program should contact them.

As we’ve written about several times in the past, CloudFlare continues to move ahead towards their goal of making DNSSEC available throughout their content distribution network (CDN) / DNS hosting service.  They’d originally had a goal of rolling it out by the end of 2014 but ran into some challenges that they are still working through.  As they note, they are getting closer.

This is great news to see – and we look forward to seeing their public beta program move ahead!  If you use CloudFlare, or just want to help them out, please do check out their blog post.

And if you want to get started with DNSSEC or DANE yourself, please visit our Start Here page to find resources to help you begin.

In Singapore for ICANN 52? Join Us At The DNSSEC Implementers Gathering

icann51-dnssec-implementers-gatheringIf you will be in Singapore on Monday, February 9, 2015, for ICANN 52 and you work with DNSSEC, you are invited to attend the informal “DNSSEC Implementers Gathering” at 19:30 at a nearby restaurant/pub.  These gatherings bring together people who have implemented DNSSEC or DANE in some way to engage in conversations and exchange information and ideas.  We’ve seen ideas for new projects come out of these gatherings in the past – and they have just generally helped deepen the connections between the community of people involved in getting DNSSEC widely deployed.

SPACE IS LIMITED so please RSVP as soon as possible to julie.hedlund@icann.org. We will be cutting off reservations by close-of-business on Thursday, 05 February 2015, but please let Julie know as soon as you can.

This is a unique opportunity to meet with and talk to key implementers, such as NominetUK, CNNIC, JPRS, NZNIC, CIRA, CZNIC, SIDN, and others.  We do ask that in order to participate you should come prepared to say a few words about your experiences.

We are grateful once again to Comcast, NBC Universal and the MPAA in providing funding to pay for this informal gathering.  The three companies sponsored the event at ICANN 51 in Los Angeles (pictured here) and we were able to stretch their sponsorships to cover this gathering in Singapore.  Thank you to the three organizations for helping with what has been an extremely useful event at ICANN meetings.  (We will, though, need new sponsors for ICANN 53.)

There are also two other DNSSEC-related events happening during the ICANN 52 week:

Monday, 09 February 1700-1830, DNSSEC for Everybody:
http://singapore52.icann.org/en/schedule/mon-dnssec-everybody

Wednesday, 11 February 0830-1445, DNSSEC Workshop:
http://singapore52.icann.org/en/schedule/wed-dnssec

If you are in Singapore and available Monday evening, 09 Feb 2015, please do join us for the DNSSEC Implementers Gathering!

P.S. It should perhaps be obvious, but this event will not be available for remote participation nor will it be live-streamed as it involves a group of people sitting down at a restaurant/pub and eating/drinking together.
