{"id":12,"date":"2005-09-27T21:45:27","date_gmt":"2005-09-28T01:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danyork.me\/thisoldglobe\/2005\/09\/27\/when_a_globe_is\/"},"modified":"2005-09-27T21:45:27","modified_gmt":"2005-09-28T01:45:27","slug":"when_a_globe_is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danyork.me\/thisoldglobe\/2005\/09\/27\/when_a_globe_is\/","title":{"rendered":"When a globe is not quite a globe&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/lodestar.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/am_weber_costello.jpg\" title=\"Am_weber_costello\" alt=\"Am_weber_costello\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;float: left\" \/>This past weekend we took a bit of a break to go visit Freeport, Maine, (and if you don&#8217;t know <em>why<\/em> we were in Freeport, there&#8217;s really only one reason (google for it)) and on the way home stopped off at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delorme.com\/companyinfo\/default.htm\">Delorme&#8217;s headquarters<\/a> just a tiny bit south in Yarmouth, ME.&nbsp; It&#8217;s always amazing to go there and visit the giant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delorme.com\/companyinfo\/eartha.htm\">Eartha <\/a>globe.<\/p>\n<p>While there, though, I of course had to visit the company store and wound up leaving with two globes.&nbsp; One of them was a reproduction of a Weber Costello globe, and the box was quite clear that it was a model.&nbsp; In fact, it turns out to be made by a company called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authenticmodels.com\/\">Authentic Models<\/a> who makes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authenticmodels.com\/home\/am1\/smartlist\/40\">an entire line of reproduction globes<\/a> primarily targeted, it would seem, at people who want nice-looking globes in their homes as decorations.<\/p>\n<p>Some very nice pieces.&nbsp; The one I purchased looks great next to all the authentic globes I have. Given that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/globes\/globeref\/globemakers.html#andrews\">Weber-Costello stopped making globes back in the 1950s<\/a>, their globes are hard to find today and so this may be the closest I&#8217;ll get to one.&nbsp; However, seeing the long list of globes produced by the folks at Authentic Models did make me wonder about some of those that are listed on eBay.
